CIPPP convened the California Task Force on Older Adults and Traffic Safety in 2000 to create a state-level strategic framework that would lay the groundwork for how to improve the traffic safety of Californias seniors. This framework was designed to guide Californias efforts to improve seniors safety as drivers, passengers, and pedestrians.
The task forces multidisciplinary team of experts included representatives from aging, health care, injury control, law enforcement, licensing, and transportation, as well as key statewide advocacy groups and private sector stakeholders. In 2002 the task force released its strategic framework report, "Traffic Safety Among Older Adults: Recommendations for California" [PDF 142KB].
Another of the projects major goals was to build task force members capacity to address older driver safety. To accomplish this, they were taught about the issue and told about promising solutions that could be employed locally or statewide. The task force also promoted collaboration between member organizations.
The success of this project led to the formation of more collaborative and coordinated statewide efforts, including the Older Californian Traffic Safety Task Force. This group is working to implement the strategic frameworks recommendations.
This project was funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency, with additional funding from the Automobile Club of Southern California.
