"Older Drivers: What Health Care Providers Need to Know"
As people age it is critical that they maintain their health and wellness so they can remain alert, responsive, and safe drivers. Most driving problems older adults have stem from age-related health and functional limitations such as reduced vision, flexibility, strength, and cognitive function.
Health care providers play a critical role by helping prevent these common health impairments from functionally limiting older peoples ability to drive safety.
This newly funded capacity-building initiative seeks to improve Californias occupational therapists, nurse practitioners, and physicians ability to screen, assess, counsel, and refer their older patients who may be at high-risk for driving problems. The program will:
Develop and promote educational modules;
Provide trainings throughout California;
Determine the current health care systems capacity to address driving safety and mobility issues;
Establish a professional development certificate program for Californias occupational therapists; and
Create a comprehensive website resource with specific information and online training for Californias health care providers.
This program is being conducted in cooperation with the Occupational Therapy Association of California, the San Jose State University Occupational Therapy Department, the California Association for Nurse Practitioners, and the Preventive Medicine Residency Program at the University of California San Diego and San Diego State University. It is administered by the Center for Injury Prevention Policy and Practice and the State and Local Injury Control Section of the California Department of Health Services, and funded by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the Business, Transportation and Housing Agency.
